    Does plaquenil help sjogren's syndrome

As the media has discussed, Sjogren's is an autoimmune disease that attacks the tear and salivary glands and generally results in widespread dryness in the body. In addition to dry eyes and mouth, this can result in difficulty breathing and problems with digestive and bowel function.

Sometimes that is how Sjogren's works. Symptoms seem to disappear for a few days and reappear. Plaquenil eventually helped my joint pain. The continued fatigue and other symptoms are related to my mctd so I am not the perfect judge for this. Jun 16, 2016 Thanks for the response. The thing is I have not been diagnosed with Sjogren's yet. As I understand taking Plaquenil and seeing if it helps are a part of diagnosis. What makes me unwilling to take the risk, however small it may be, is that I only seem to have two symptoms. It’s used in people with Sjogren’s syndrome, rheumatoid arthritis, and lupus to relieve joint pain, fatigue, and rashes. It may take up to 12 weeks for you to notice the effects of hydroxychloroquine. Hydroxychloroquine is safe, even for pregnant women with Sjogren’s syndrome.

Treatment includes artificial tears and saliva and, in more severe cases, immune blockers such as prednisone, Plaquenil and even the cancer medication Methotrexate. As with most autoimmune illnesses, it is much more common in women than men.

Two drugs, pilocarpine Salagen and cevimeline Evoxac, are approved for dry mouth associated with Sjögren’s syndrome.

I got tinnitus nearly a year ago and jury is out as to why. I started plaquenil in January and now my tinnitus is getting louder again. Just a thought, but I don't know about the Plaq connection. Many docs are not aware of the neurological implications of APS etc. I do know that medications can cause tinnitus and as I have had plaquenil 2 months and a spike in tinnitus I am worried about a connection as tinnitus is noted as a side effect.
